Anti-Racism Statement and Resources
At Movement, we hold firm to the truth that all human beings are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and as such, are due all dignity and worth. In terms of social values, this means fairness, justice, and equity, not only equality. For that reason, we lament for and with all those who live in fear, grief, trauma, disadvantage, and hopelessness in their fight to be valued. We also condemn attitudes and practices - subtle and blatant, individual and systemic - that perpetuate these conditions for people of color. We affirm the duties of our federal and state governments, law enforcement, and courts, while also affirming the right of citizens to seek reform in those institutions.
We repent for the explicit and implict racism we have in our own hearts. But we do not want our goal to merely be sorry. We believe part of God's calling for believers is to also pursue justice for others. Firstly, to reflect the values of God (Matthew 5:3-11). Secondly, as ministers of the Gospel, to adorn the gospel with sacrificial good works in hopes that many will not only find some measure of peace here on earth, but perfect peace in eternity (Matthew 5:16).
To that end, we have compiled a working list of resources and potential next steps for those wishing to get involved in pursuing racial justice. It can be overwhelming trying to sift through all of the suggested steps circulating on media so we sought to pull together information from trusted sources. We are still considering our next steps as a church, to ensure the actions taken are God-glorifying and sustainable. We will update as we have developments.
Education
- We recommend this list of multi-media resources from the Sola Network. It is stated to be for Asian-Americans, but don't be thrown off by that - the majority of resources listed are not specific to AAs.
